This year’s WCOL Country Jam headliner is none other than country megastar Eric Church! Born and raised in North Carolina, Church began playing music at the age of 13 and performing at local bars and clubs around his hometown. After graduating from Appalachian State University with a bachelor’s degree in business, Church and his then fiance separated, which sent Church to Nashville to pursue his career in country music.
After being signed on to Capital Records in 2006, Church released his first album, Sinners like Me, which included his debut single and Top 20 hit, “How ‘Bout’ You”. In 2009, Church followed up his successful first album with his second, Carolina. After the release, Church broke into the Top 10 charts with songs, “Love Your Love the Most” and “Hell on a Heart”. With no hesitation, Church continued to climb the charts with new releases such as “Smoke a Little Smoke” in 2010 and ultimately scored his first number one hit with song, “Drink In My Hand”. Church has released 5 albums since his debut in 2006 with his latest titled, The Outsiders, in 2014. With multiple hits and awards including Album of The Year, Church has grown his fan base, dubbed the Church Choir, and sold out arenas all over the nation. The two- day festival will be hosted at the historic Legend Valley Concert Venue and Campground located on Buckeye Lake, just thirty minutes east of downtown Columbus. 2015 will mark the 3rd year that WCOL Country Jam has taken place at the venue. The festival is packed with a multitude of country music acts from classic country, southern rock country, and modern country artists.

The WCOL Country Jam is a country festival that has occurred annually for the last 10 years. In 2013, WCOL and Bluestone Promotions formed a partnership to bring the show to the Legend Valley Music Center, a historic venue located near Buckeye Lake in Thornville, Ohio. Previous years included performers Hank Williams Jr., Dierks Bentley, Gary Allan and Tim McGraw. The venue boasts acres of campgrounds and a large field with great views of the stage. Legend Valley Music Center has functioned as a music venue since the early 1970’s, but has undergone some name changes since that time. LVMC has hosted a multitude of artists including: The Charlie Daniels Band, The Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, Alabama, Journey, and Jimmy Buffett.

High Valley keeps in line with traditional country sounds while they explore Americana, rock and pop influences in their major-label debut album, Dear Life. Tracks of inspiration, desires of the heart and their journey as musicians make up the record. The 11-track project experiments with a variety of beats and guitar picking that keep the music interesting while they share their pitch-perfect harmonies.
Production elements blend genres to create foot-tapping beats and melodies that replay through your head all day. High Valley make their own sound that will stand out on country radio while staying in touch with country roots that serve as each tune’s platform.
The Canadian country group’s lead single, “Make You Mine,” has the most interesting sound on the album. It sticks out among the rest and will draw intrigued listeners into explore what other stories the duo has to offer.
“Dear Life,” the title track, shares feelings about making choices while growing up. Its message will resonate with much of their audience and may be representative where they are in their own life. It follows similar patterns as surrounding tracks, including heavy drums that bring the song to life.
“The Only” and “She’s With Me” have comparable themes of adoration. Their obvious pop influences match the song’s tone with complimenting faster-tempo beats. The featured repetitive hooks just about guarantee them stuck in your head all day as you fight the urge to dance along.
Americana influence is heaviest in the No. 8 title, “I Be U Be.” The back-and forth nature of the song has hints of tribal elements as strong imagery describes an ideal love scenario. Just as many other included tracks, “I Be U Be” stays clear of electric guitar solos and focuses on percussion and diction, a factor that might become a signature in their career.
The closing track, “Young Forever” has a similar vibe that compares to Billy Currington’s “We Are Tonight.” The embrace-the-moment trend adds a brightness to the album that contributes to its already high-spirited qualities.
Emotional tracks intertwined with flirty fun songs lead to this diverse album. Dear Life is an exciting piece of art that serves as a solid platform for the bright career they have ahead of them.

It would be an understatement to say that a lot has happened since Whiskey Myers was last in the recording studio. Over two whirlwind years, the gritty Texas band hit #1 on the iTunes Country Chart with their breakout third album ‘Early Morning Shakes,’ earned raves everywhere from Rolling Stone to USA Today, and toured the US and UK relentlessly, slaying massive festival crowds and sharing stages with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hank Williams Jr., Jamey Johnson, and more along the way. You’d be forgiven, then, for expecting things to work a little differently this time around when the band reunited with acclaimed producer Dave Cobb for their stellar new album, ‘Mud.’ But as it turns out, success doesn’t change a Southern gentleman, and they don’t come any more Southern than Whiskey Myers.
Fueled by larger-than-life performances honed tight from countless nights on the road, ‘Mud’ finds the band scaling new heights of songwriting and musicianship, with searing guitars, soulful vocals, and indelible hooks. While their approach to the music and humble, hard-working attitudes may not have altered, there have been developments in the Whiskey Myers world, most notably with the arrival of new faces. For the recording sessions, the band’s five founding members—Cody Cannon on lead vocals and guitar, Cody Tate and John Jeffers on guitars, Gary Brown on bass, and Jeff Hogg on drums—fleshed out their sound with the addition of fiddler/keyboard player Jon Knudson and percussionist Tony Kent, who are both now full-time members. “They bring a great energy, and I think it’s really helped our sound and makes the band more versatile,” explains Cannon. “There’s less room onstage now, but sometimes a family grows.”
